On September 2, 1945, the 2nd world war ended by an unconditional surrender by the Axis Powers which held Germany and Japan. Germany surrendered to the Western Allies on May 7th, then to the Soviet Union a day later.
Japan was able to hold out for a few months more until Atomic bombs were dropped in two major cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Their announcement of decision of surrendering was made on August 15, 1945 by radio. The surrender, however, was not signed until September 2, 1945, exactly 6 years and 1 day from when World War II started.
